About me My name is Graham. I'm 36 and was diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia in July of 1999. This is my second attempt at doing a website. I hope that it will be useful to everybody, not just, my friends and family. Please get in touch if it has been of use. Welcome if you are visiting for the first time and if you have been to my previous site, welcome to my spanking new one. Since my previous effort I have started a learndirect course which should teach me how to use this web builder properly. Some things have changed since I last spoke to the masses but the importance I put on keeping yourself fit and active if you have Ataxia has not changed. My theory remains that if you have working muscles in your body they need to be worked hard. If they are not told they are needed they will give up. I still go to the gym 3 times a week. Despite this, Ataxia is still worsening my balance and brings me closer to falling by the day. I have been using (4-wheel) walker for about three months and find it very useful. I realized that a walking stick was a very good way of letting other people know that I have a difficulty while walking but it did not give me much help. Now I have a tool which not only makes it clear I have a walking and balance problem, but is also of help to me and also provides a very handy seat when needed.
As many of you will know, Ataxia UK has had one annual conference each year in a different part of the country. The 2003 conference and AGM was held in Blackpool and was very enjoyable.

If you have Ataxia I hope that what I have written here, helps you in your day to day life, Living with Ataxia. I hope I can help if you have been recently diagnosed and are in need of someone who understands. ( click on photos to enlarge)
I would go as far as to say that I found it more enjoyable than my two previous conferences at Slough in 2001 and Bradford in 2002. Not that these were not good conferences, it is always great to meet new friends, familiar and new with similar challenges. I think anyone present will agree with me when I say that the conference content and the people talking were people I wanted to listen to. |
