Around the House

At present I am waiting to move to a council bungalow. I am fairly able to get around the three bedroom terraced where I live at the moment. I often get up to answer the phone, forgetting the Ataxia and fall, either onto the coffee table or safely onto the other sofa. Another thing that happens is that I turn to get something from the fridge and lunge sideways. The stairs have become  a bit of a challenge in the past 6 months but, having fitted a handrail as well as having the banister I have not fallen yet. Something that I wonder about is " why does it seem safer going up than coming down"? Is it just the fear of falling  that makes coming down feel more hazardous?

Something I applaud is the level of support and help I get from the local authority. I have mentioned that I am waiting to move to a council bungalow. Having a visit from a housing OT, he assessed my needs and within 2 months I was put to the top of the housing list. He arranged for grab rails to be fitted where they were needed. Unfortunately, council services are not equally as efficient throughout the  country. DART ( Disabled adult resource team  ) is another service which works well in the area where I live. The list of services they can arrange for disabled is very long. Physiotherapy, speech therapy, counselling, mobility aids are just a few. I recommend finding out, locally, if DART can be of help to you, in your area.
