The Gym Anyone who knows me or has read about me knows about my antics in the gym, three times a week. I believe the body needs to be, in near, peak condition to stand the best chance dealing with the progressive affects of Ataxia. Whatever strain of Ataxia you may have I almost guarantee that you will feel the benefit of some form of exercise if done on a regular basis. I want to appeal, especially, to people who feel they are in the early stages of Ataxia and say that if I had not started exercising when I did ( three years ago) I feel sure that my Ataxia would have been allowed to progress, unchallenged. Also, I wouldn't have allowed myself, to continue eating the foods I enjoy in the same frequency, because I would have got too fat. I have recently adjusted my routine, taking out weight lifting machines in favour of more balance and coordination exercises. I still spend half an hour on various cardio. machines ( bike, rowing, treadmill and cross-trainer. |
It is not my place to make recommendations as to what exercises to do. You must take the advice of a physiotherapist for that. All I want to do is show you is what works for me. Exercise seems to have undergone a revolution recently with the use of the flexy ball. I do the above, bending and straightening my legs X 10 Then try alternate legs. This is a balance exercise I try, for as long as I can with my legs together and one finger on my walker, making sure there is a soft landing in case I fall.
