The vast majority of Ataxians I have met,  tend to have some degree of speech difficulty.  Some have very little problems in communications.

Any symptoms of speech impairment are made worse by rushing or becoming nervous.  For example many of us dislike phone conversation with anyone other than our closest friends.

This is to do with the brain calculation worsening. The brain giving the voice box inaccurate information. What needs to be understood, by the person listening, is that the person speaking has good intellect and is in possession of all their faculties. The brain, should be telling the mouth and tongue to move in a certain way to deliver the required sound,  but it does not work as it should do and it gets worse, progressively.  I think it is very important that the person who is listening, understands why the speech is being affected and then takes the time, however long it takes, to understand what the speaker is trying to say.

  Speaking on the phone

I enjoy telling jokes. People who have listened while I tell the joke, will know that I often burst into laughter just before the punch line,  ruining the effect. It concerns me when I think that one day people may think that it may take up too much of their time to listen to someone who appears to be drunk and has low intellect. It is one symptom of Ataxia that I hope is a long time coming.
