Scouting

These days I have strong arguments about scouting and about how difficult it has become to run a youth organisation.

I cannot praise the scouting movement enough for what it did for me throughout my scouting career. I simply would not be the person and character I am today , if I had never been to scouts. When I became a leader here in Bristol I really started to realize the benefits of getting a group of boys, ranging from 10 to 15 years old, working together as a team and sharing the acquired skills between the ages.

As an example I often gave was, I said that you can show a 10 year old how to tie a knot with a piece of string, one week. By the following week he would have forgotten it, so you show him again. By the following week he may well remember so he can then show his mate what he has learnt. That boy can now pass on the skill he has to the whole of the scout troop. In reality it takes five years to get a boy to remember how to tie a damn knot but hey that boy is going to have fun learning.
